Cooke City Montana

Monday, February 21st, 2005

I thought it had finally happened. A trip planned for the Whistler area! Winds and high presure turned our snow to shit, so it’s back on the road. Destination Montana to filmn for a high def tv show called Nomads as well as a feature filmn by Wink. Skiing by snowmobile in the northern Bridgers and Cooke city with My brother Daryl, Will Burkes and cody Townsend. Always a good time sledding and skiing but if you have the choice run for the coast. These mountains suck!!!

Mica Heli

Saturday, February 12th, 2005

On assignment with Freeskier mag at Mica heli just north of Revelstoke.
First off, this place is amazing. The lodge is perched atop a small roll in a clear cut, looking right down at the convergence of some of the major geographic features of the West. The Columbia River makes almost a 180-degree turn right at our feet, turning south toward the Pacific and Oregon. Across the river to the south are the Selkirks, to the north are the Monashees. There?s serious history of heliskiing across the river in those ranges ? that?s where it all got started. Here at Mica, we?re sitting on the edge of the Canadian Rockies, making this the convergence of three major mountain ranges.
Once the heli lifted off, it’s been nothing but good skiing. The snow is bomber ? lighter than coastal but more stable than continental snowpacks ? so we could jump onto any line that looked good and had sun. Hugo has been here twice before, including a few weeks last year, and has never had these kind of conditions. If you like skiing pillow lines this place is heaven!!!!

Kashmir India

Monday, February 7th, 2005

Quite possibly the coolest ski trip of all time. Spent just under three weeks filming with Tom Day, Manu Gadet and Shroder Baker for Warren Miller. Majority of our time was spent skiing at the amazing resort of Gulmarg in Northern Kashmir close to the Pakistan and China borders. Ski area is one gondola taking you up to the highest point a ski lift goes, 4000m. We were extremelly lucky with good snow, blue skies and open lifts. It’s the first year of the uper gondola running so they are still working out the quirks. What a great oportunity to ski this area on it’s virgen year. The best thing about this trip was not the skiing but the people and culture. Especially the mountain people were some of the friendliest people I’ve ever met. As we skied thru farming villages everyone would come out to see us and invite us in for tea. I’m sure we must have looked like aliens invading their homeland. Check out the segment next year in Warren Millers Off The Grid. I think it’ll be a great one.
