New for 2009

Monday, December 29th, 2008

Just when I thought the progression of ski/sled gear was about to max out. High end companies go and totally revolutionize the sport. Rossignol released a ski last year called the S7. It make skiing in all conditions so easy that a hard packed day is fun again. These year they’ve stepped it up again with the super 7 with a bit stiffer flex and less sidecut the thing skis and looks amazing. In regards to the snowmobile world. Fox has change the ride of a rev xp forever. Their evol x front shocks are comparable to no other and with this new rear skid and shock setup you feel like you’re on a dirt bike, not a sled. CFR and Bulldog decks have been a leader in sled racks and decks for a while. This year they didn’t need to change much so they offered some epic colour choices.

Woke up to a spectacular day on Christmas in whistler. Beautiful blue skies and a bit of fresh snow. after opening presents, my wife Karla and I went up Whistler Mt for a few turns.

Met up with some local friends and hiked up to a run called DOA. The snow was surprisingly good and the scenics amazing. It’s an amazing place to be sitting on top of Blackcomb peak getting ready to ski. One of the great ski pioneers Trevor Peterson has his ice axe bolted to a slab of rock on the summit. This time of year it feels like sunset all day long as the sun is so low in the sky. Bring on the snow!!!

Brandywine in search of snow

Brandywine in search of snow

Ever since they’ve started keeping track of precipitation amount, this has been the driest year ever for the coast. It’s also been one of the coldest. Both of which don’t make for the best ski conditions, but the scenery has been spectacular.

Non the less i’ve been skiing/sledding a bit trying to get back in shape for when it turns on. Whistler has a new lift called the peak 2 peak. It doesn’t really help out the skiing but it’s great to have so many people stuck up in the sky and not shredding pow!

The forecast is calling for the temps to warm up and the snow to start by Xmas. Finger’s crossed, we need it.

first pow turns of the year at RMR

first pow turns of the year at RMR

It’s been a bit of a ruff start on the coast of B.C this year. Minimal amounts of snow and cold temps. Nothing like back in my home town of Kenora but -10 which is cold for here. Rumor had it that Revelstoke has a lot more snow with 2 feet of fresh, so Geoff Kyle, James Heim and I headed over the pass for a few days of rooping and skiing. We had a few great days on the resort as well as in the backcountry on the sleds.

It doesn’t seem to mater how good of shape you think you’re in, but by the end of three days in a row you can hardly get up off the toilet. Feels good to be tired again. If you haven’t checked out the new resort of RMR. Get there quick as it’s the only place in B.C with huge vert and good snow right now.
