Great snow for christmas

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

Whistler area has had amazing snow all thru the christmas holidays. I’ve been out sled skiing with Balke Jorgenson and Eric Berger, trying to work off the turkey dinners and booze. Here’s a couple shots that show just how good it’s been. I love the sled shot where you can’t tell where the snow ends and clouds start.

Lily’s first day of skiing

Saturday, December 26th, 2009

My daughter Lily just had her first Christmas and we figured that the best way to make it a memorable one would be with her first ski. It was a beauty day up on Whistler. It was a great day hanging out with Damian Cromwell and his son that is a month younger than Lily. What would a day on the mountain be without beers at the GLC. Lily couldn’t make it through the whole day. She past out half way down the ski out and slept all the way thru apres.

GMC world of skiing

Friday, December 18th, 2009

Just shot a small segment for GMC world of skiing. It was a profile on blake Jorgenson but they wanted me to come up and film blake in action as well as find out what it was like to work with a photographer like Blake. We did a few runs on Whistler then down to the GLC, where my daughter Lily was behind the bar serving up pitchers of beer.

Lily's first day on ice

Lily

It’s been a couple weeks of cold weather and no snow on the coast. Only good thing that comes with that is outdoor hockey. This weekend we had close to 50 people out. People were playing hockey, learning to skate or just hanging out sampling different kinds of deer and moose sausages over the fire.

I just picked up the new Powder Photo Annual and as it turns out Eric Berger and I have the cover from a sled ski day on Mt Cayley. I’m super stoked on the shot as we tried all kinds of different angles of this crevas air. In fact another shot of the same air was a full page in the Sept issue of Powder. This cover brings my total to 43 cover shots to date but my first of the photo annual which has always been the crem du la crem of issues.

hiking up sub peak, all photos www.mattiasfredriksson.com

hiking up sub peak, all photos www.mattiasfredriksson.com

The wind and rain destroyed the Whistler backcountry so I loaded up the sled and headed back to Revy. In the ski world when I travel, Most things are taken care of like passes and lodging. It’s known as being hooked up but there’s another saying of being pimped out when the royal treatment comes out. I arrived with photographer Mattias Fredrickson and skier Henrik Windstedt to the Nelsen Lodge where RMR put su up. The place is unreal. Quite possibly the nicest place I’ve ever stayed with 360 views of the mountains and the interior of a royal palace.

The sun was out for all the days and the snow stayed good. It was cold as shit with a bit of wind but the skiing was as always a lot of fun and with the sun out it gave me some time to explore some terrain that I’ve never skied here. If you haven’t been here yet it’s a must hit if you’re skiing anywhere in B.C.

Revelstoke opening

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

I just got back from a great opening weekend at RMR. I’ve yet to miss an opening day there since the mountain changed over from the little local hill Mt Mckenzie. The skiing was amzing and the vibe intoxicating. It’s been dry conditions down low in the valley so far this year in Revelstoke but the sub alpine and alpine is game on.

After a day of burning the legs and skiing everything I wanted I changed focus to a couple days of sledding with Rob Alford.

We had a blast trying to get into a zone that no one had punched in yet. My body is beat down on every level from legs, back, arms to liver. So it’s home to ski and sled some blu bird days that are forecasted.
